This course focuses on women authors and their works in a variety of literary genres, such as short stories, novels, poetry, drama, memoir, and creative non-fiction. Students will read literature from the past and present by women of varied social and ethnic backgrounds to discover the common personal and political concerns which have motivated women to write throughout history. Emphasis will be placed upon developing critical thinking skills for understanding and appreciating individual texts, and on using writing as a way to explore ideas, make connections, and express knowledge.
